No More Excuses!

As I watched Excuses Begone, a special with Wayne Dyer on PBS this week, I found myself nodding a lot. Yes, that's what I'm talkin' about all the time. A life of no excuses!

I walked away from that show with a renewed energy that I brought to my work as a life coach. Ready to bust any excuse in the book, I challenged my beloved clients to move past fear, stop playing small, and take a step towards fulfilling their life dreams.

It's so easy to get overwhelmed in life, to just get through all of your obligations, to tackle your "to do" list, which has everyone on it but yourself. Okay, maybe you go to the gym and get haircuts. You remember to eat a few times a day, but are you building towards something that makes your heart sing? Are you taking time every day to tap into your own journey and self-growth?

This video from Nike illustrates my point. I found it posted by a "friend" on Facebook this morning, and although my blog was going to be about something entirely different this morning, the Universe wanted me to write about excuses. All fingers were pointing me there.

So, how to bust through excuses?

1) Make a commitment to take full responsibility for your life. That means no more blaming anything or anyone. Not your parents, not your circumstances, not your spouse, your children, and certainly not your age.

2) Get inspired. Start spending time with people less fortunate than yourself. People who have made a life with less resources, less ability than yourself. Read about them. Watch a video about them. Go and visit them. Be inspired by them.

3) Appreciate YOU. Take time every day to appreciate your innate gifts.

4) Focus on gratitude, not attitude. Be positive and look for the good in your life.

5) Just do it! As Nike says, stop making excuses and take a small step today.
Not tomorrow. Today.

Each small bold step leads you to a life well-lived. Every time you push something off, you have lost an opportunity. It won't be smooth sailing all the way, but that bumpy ride will be exciting and alive. I know I'd rather fall on my face and keep getting up than stay safe and live a ho-hum life.
